Queensland – China Climate Change Fellowships
The Queensland – China Climate Change Fellowship Program is a joint initiative of the Queensland Government and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Beijing, the People's Republic of China.
Through the program, Queensland and Chinese researchers and other professionals are able to participate in a short-term (2 - 4 weeks) reciprocal exchange to scope out projects, share knowledge and ideas, and cultivate strategic links that address climate change impacts and develop responses. The program is jointly managed by International Collaborations in the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation and the Chinese Government’s Ministry of Science and Technology.
Applications for the 2009 round are now open and close on 15 June 2009.
Applications must be submitted on the application form provided. Applicants are required to complete all sections of the form and attach the necessary documents.

Number of awards
Up to six fellowships will be offered each year, with at least three awards for applicants from Queensland to travel to China, and another three for applicants from China to travel to Queensland.
Eligibility
Eligible Queensland applicants for outbound fellowships will be persons from:
- a Queensland Government state and local agency or Queensland statutory body;
- a Queensland-based research or educational institution (including universities, research institutes); or
- private industry based in Queensland.
Applicants from Queensland must be Australian citizens, or have permanent resident status in Australia, with their principal place of residence in Queensland.
Unsuccessful applicants in any one year are eligible to re-apply in subsequent years.
Fellowships are awarded on an individual basis only. Joint applications will not be considered.
The decision of the Queensland Government and MOST regarding eligibility is final.
Selection criteria
Eligible applications will be assessed competitively on the basis of the relative merit of the proposed application against the following criteria:
- Feasibility of the application:
- technical feasibility/likely success of the proposed program;
- likelihood that the proposed activities will be completed in the stated timeframe; and
- the applicant's expertise and capacity to carry out the program.
- Relevance and value of the application to:
- address research needs or gaps in knowledge to address the environmental, economic and social impacts of climate change;
- inform the applicant’s respective government’s response to climate change;
- foster an interchange of knowledge and skills that benefit Queensland and Chinese institutions, government and the broader community; and contribute to the future work of the applicant by advancing their knowledge, skills and professional linkages.
2008 Recipients
The recipients for the 2008 round of the Queensland–China Climate Change Fellowships were announced on 16 October 2008 at the Federation of Chinese Scholars in Australia (FOCSA) symposium on the Gold Coast. They were:

- Ms. Cai Wenjia, Tsinghua University,Beijing
The China Fellows were accompanied by Dr. Gao Xinquan (Head of Delegation), of The Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21, Beijing.
