Walker Institute for Climate System Research
To help build a greater understanding of climate change, QCCCE has formed an alliance with the UK's Walker Institute for Climate System Research at the University of Reading, which has expertise in:
- the effect of climate on crops and water resources
- tropical weather systems like El Niño and typhoons
- hazardous weather and its implications for the insurance industry.
This collaboration will give QCCCE scientists the opportunity to use leading high-resolution climate models to better understand the effects of climate change on these priority issues.
Potential research collaborations include studies of the Madden-Julian Oscillation, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, and the links between them, as these aspects of weather and climate are especially relevant to sustainability in Queensland because of their influence on rainfall and extreme events.
Premier seals alliance
The then Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, and the University of Reading's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gordon Marshall, sealed the alliance at a ceremony held at Queensland House on the Strand on 28 March 2007.
The Premier said 'This is a major step in addressing the critical issue of climate change. The objective of the collaboration is to support international research activities into climate, agricultural and hydrological systems.'
