Ecosystems
Protecting Queensland's lifestyle and environment
Queensland's unique natural environments support outstanding biodiversity and are a major tourist destination for international and domestic visitors.
Nature-based tourism contributes significantly to the Queensland economy. In 2006/07 the Great Barrier Reef generated over $3.7 billion in tourism to the Queensland economy and provided an estimated 43,700 full-time jobs.
National parks are also a significant contributor to the Queensland economy, with direct spending by tourists of $4.43 billion a year.
Our unique ecosystems stand to be greatly damaged by unrestrained climate change including the potential destruction of the Great Barrier Reef.
Managing the impacts of climate change on ecosystems is a significant challenge. Protecting habitat and improving the connections between existing bushland will help build resilience in our ecosystems to future climate change impacts.
