Government
Leading by example
The role of the Queensland Government is not just to prepare, support and facilitate climate change action for households, communities and business. It must also lead by example by reducing its own carbon footprint, ensuring that government operations account for climate change, and government services are resilient to the impacts of climate change.
The governments greenhouse gas emissions stem mainly from electricity consumption, vehicle use, air travel and purchasing.
In 2006-07, government buildings used approximately 1034 gigawatt hours of electricity, resulting in over 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.
As the builder, owner and operator of essential infrastructure, the government has an opportunity to use its significant purchasing power to promote resource efficiency and climate resilience. Refurbishing government buildings to incorporate energy efficiency or ensuring new buildings are built to best practice standards, will minimise emissions from government services and operations.
