Tools to minimise climate change impacts

Compared to the rest of Australia, Queensland has experienced above average population growth for more than twenty years. This has driven a rapid rate of urban growth and pressures on essential infrastructure.

Queenslands infrastructure and buildings will come under increasing pressure from a changing climate with expected rises in temperatures, more frequent extreme weather events, storm surges and flooding.

The Queensland Government has an opportunity to ensure planning and building design play a key role in building communities resilience to the impacts of climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Maintaining a business as usual approach will lock in a significant increase in the greenhouse footprint from the planning and building sector, which would require costly retrofit as the need to reduce emissions becomes more urgent. By adopting improved standards for new development and accelerating retrofitting of existing stock, Queensland can significantly reduce emissions from this sector.

Enhancing the understanding of the likely climate change impacts at local levels will also assist state and local government planners, and help communities build resilience to climate change impacts.
