Plugging in project

The Plugging-In project is an initiative under Driving Change: Queensland’s Electric Vehicle Policy (PDF, 913K)*, which outlines a range of initiatives to prepare Queensland for the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs).

In the same way that petrol or diesel cars need refuelling at petrol stations, electric vehicles need recharging. Currently there is no network of recharging stations for electric vehicles, which limits their range of use.

The purpose of the Plugging-In project is to build a basic recharging network across major hubs initially in South East Queensland, mainly within an 80 km range of the Brisbane CBD.

Under the project the Queensland Government will provide funding towards installing EV recharging facilities in a range of locations including government buildings, major destinations, and commercial and community hubs such as universities and shopping centres.

Preliminary mapping analysis indicates initial areas should include government buildings and commercial and community hubs across Brisbane and in areas such as Ipswich, Springfield, the Gold Coast, Pine Rivers and the Sunshine Coast. Further installations in areas within 160 km of the Brisbane CBD and regional centres will also be considered.

How will sites be chosen?

The criteria for determining the location of electric vehicle charging sites includes but is not limited to:

Expressions of interest

Expressions of interest are being sought from owners or operators of potential sites for electric vehicle charging stations. To lodge an expression of interest, complete the EOI form online.

Funding

Funding is available for eligible organisations that wish to be involved in the project. The Funding guidelines for the Plugging-In project (PDF, 134K)* contain further information on eligibility and the application process.
